Bathroom Remodels – To DIY Or Not

When most homeowners decide that their bathroom needs to be remodeled, they contact a licensed professional to do the work. However, others choose to take the project into their own hands, hoping to save some money. We are going to discuss which bathroom remodels you can do yourself, and which ones should really be left to the professionals.

There are two general rules to keep in mind:

1. If your DIY project requires new plumbing or electrical work, leave it to the professionals!

Projects such as installing a new shower, bathtub, sink, toilet, light fixture, floor drain, or wall socket are best left to a licensed professional. A minor mistake can have serious consequences, from water damage/flooding to a house fire.

There are specific building codes and industry standards for plumbing and electrical work, which the average homeowner is not equipped to handle.

2. Stay away from removing old mirrors.

They can easily break into large shards of glass, causing serious injuries.

So what bathroom remodels can you do yourself?

Painting is rather simple; as long as you do a little research on the process, you should be capable of doing this yourself.

Adding new floor tiles is another project you can easily tackle, but will require a few tools. In order to install new tiling, you will need a tile saw and a truck to pick up the tiles (unless you prefer to have them delivered).

We recommend going with larger tiles, as they will go in faster and are generally easier to install than smaller, mosaic style tiles. Lastly, you may want to sand and re-stain your cabinets to freshen up the look of your bathroom. This task is easy enough for most people, but will take some time and effort.

Not all bathroom DIY projects are created equal. Any project that involves plumbing and electrical work should be left to the professionals. However, with a little research and the right tools, the average homeowner can easily install new tiles, paint, sand, and re-stain cabinets, fixtures, and walls.
